The Patient Navigation and Community Health Worker Training Program (PNCT) has been granted full recognition as a Community Health Worker (CHW) training program by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE).

Full recognition means that a training program meets all requirements established by the state of Colorado. Each recognized training program has to meet a standard set of CHW competencies that prepares CHWs and health navigators to take an assessment to be credentialed and listed on a registry.

PNCT has been training this workforce since 2006. In 2018, the program was recognized as a Health Navigator training program and has trained hundreds of navigators/CHWs who are listed on the registry to date.

In 2023, CDPHE adopted the umbrella term “Community Health Worker” for the workforce. Together with a group of stakeholders, CDPHE revised the Health Navigator core competencies to a new set of eight Community Health Worker core competencies. Those working in these roles may also be known as promotores de salud/promatora, patient navigators, health navigators, or resource navigators, among others.
