The Health Literacy course is designed to improve navigation skills for those delivering prevention services. This comprehensive course is intended for Patient Navigators (PNs) who want to improve navigation skills, find out more on the topic, and discuss how health literacy fits into the overall field of navigation.  Furthermore, this course will help course participants improve skills to increase patient health literacy.

Audience: The recommended training audience can include:

  • Anyone who educates patients

In this course, you will learn to:

  • Identify a variety of health education materials that are appropriate for your patients.
  • Modify spoken and written communication (e.g. word choice, explanations) to increase patient understanding of health-related information.
  • Use appropriate strategies to check for understanding in order to make sure the patients understand important health information.
  • Practice methods to increase comprehension, readability, retention and applying skills to increase health outcomes.
